My Renewable Energy Dream for America

For some reason in my life, I have always loved news and programs about technology, especially I loved ones about renewable energy.  As a kid, I use to think of different ways of getting energy directly from the earth such as wind mills on top of every house, building, bridge, and coastline.

If I was in charge of what this country's energy issue, I  would look towards a long-term solution and invest for the long-term. I think so many times we like to look for the quick fix, but ignore the long-term issues and this needs to end now.  I would build vast solar farms throughout the Southwest, on top of buildings, on top of parking garages, and any other place possible.  I would line all the coast lines with wind turbines. I would put wind turbines on top of all skyscrapers, bridges, mountains, hills, and in between all of the highways.  When we finish the right technology, I would put tidal turbines off the East Coast in the Atlantic current.

I would do everything possible to use all possibilities to power our country and make this country 100% energy independent.  I know getting this country to go energy independent will take time and sacrifice in the short term plus we would need to change the way we live our lives.  We need to find ways to use less energy and use what energy we do need from renewable sources.

I know this will take a long time to do, but this isn't a short term problem that can just be fixed in day.  This is a problem for our whole nation and we must all do what we can to work for the future to better our lives.  I actually think the initial costs would actually pay off in the long-term since power would be produced from a free power source so the average cost of energy would go down for everyone.  I know this isn't always thought to be the case with renewable energy, but I think over time it would lower all of our costs and I know some will disagree with me.

If we were ever able to go 100% renewable energy from sources like wind, solar, hydro, and tidal, should we make energy extremely cheap?  I knew there would be the price of maintenance and additions, but once it is up and running, the costs should be stable since the source of the fuel for the turbines would be free and renewable.

Let us all work together to bring this country into the 21st century and to move towards more renewable energy sources in the near future.

Should our energy be inexpensive if and when we get most of our energy from renewable sources?

  • Yes of course
  • Yes, but it isn't likely
  • Maybe, but who knows
  • No, but it is a good thought
  • No way, capitalism lives :)

I agree with your way of thinking. Try to solve a problem, not find ways to cope with it temporarily. Something I would be interested in is a movement to get more and more individuals to install solar panels and such on their own property in order to generate their own power. And I'd offer incentives for real estate/business owners to install solar panels on their buildings to become independent of grid energy. Is that sort of what you had in mind?

Hi,there! I've read your profile and your views on the presidents office and our two political parties.I agree that the two parties leaders are sometimes fanatical in their views.Yet they both seem to agree that more than two parties is to their disadvantage. So,my view is that they like having only one other political party to deal with.In fact if I didn't know any better I'd say that they are working together in reality. The only real difference is when they have to play a role for public consumption.

As,for renewable energy alternatives -

Wind

1.Takes up a lot of space

2.May interfere with migrating birds

3.May be damaged by Tornados

4.May cause too much noise, although I've read that they have made one that is very low in noise today.

Solar

1.Still expensive

2.The technology is in continual advancement

3.People are waiting for it to become less expensive and more reliable than what they currently have.

Waves

1.Depending on where it's deployed ,can take up a lot of space.

2.Dependability and reliability are in question.

3.Espense in question.

Geothermal

1.Safety and dependability

2.Transmission distance

3.Cost

There is a difference between "Renewable" and "Sustainable".

1.Tree's are renewable ,but not all tree's row at the same rate or produce the same amount of energy.

2. "sustainability" is when what you use for energy is not only renewable ,but renewable over a specific time hopefully indefinitely.

I too wish we could have a sustainable energy other than what the majority of us currently have.

If,you search the internet you will find many inventions past and present that would meet the requirements of sustainability. So much so ,that we would not have to cut down trees for energy or use oil for fuel any longer.

In fact there are

inventions so much more advanced that Solar cells,Windmills,Geothermal etc...You would be surprise to learn that they exist.

A youtube search for "FUEL FROM WATER" is a good start.

Search for "Xogen" through google for another interesting website on the subject of fuel from water.

Great Hub. We must fund research into all different forms of renewable energy. Wind is definitely way up there along with solar. Our planet's existence is dependent on it. The developing nations must be convinced to do so also. Our national security is also involved to wean us off foreign oil.

Great hub. Hopefully, we don't have to go through an energy crisis before we act.

The problem right now is that current renewable energy systems create more problems than they solve. Right now , the ONLY way to have usable wind/solar systems to power the US is to pay for large flywheel systems in the gigawatt range. Unfortunately, not only are those systems expensive, they also have the chance of causing a massive kenetic failure, which would be similar to a large atomic bomb going off (If you think a nuclear meltdown is bad, wait till you see a flywheel explode!). I'm all for getting off of foreign oil , but wind/solar and the like are one of the worst ways to do it.

Very nice photos.Solar power is becoming a good alternative to electricity for many people as it’s both efficient and economical but most of all environmentally friendly.
